Create your own truly beautiful outdoor space starting with an awning like the MX-3. Beautiful design, beautiful fabrics and high performance all round. The MX-3 is just one of the many products to come from over 50 years of building high quality awnings and sun shade products to protect and enhance outdoor spaces. This is a full cassette compact awning with style and a lot of choice for customising.
The LED line lighting option, built into the cassette, is just one of the optional features to make your awning far more than a sun shade product and more value overall to your outdoor space.

Markilux MX-3

An electric, full casssette retractable awning with a rounded silhouette and beautiful curves in a made to measure offering for the perfect fit to your home.
This awning looks good closed, open and when in use with the optional LED lights which can always be operated even when the awning is not in use.
The choice to mix-and-match the strip of colour of the end cap insert with that of the fabric makes for a coordinated style designed to impress. Entirely fresh and innovative, you won't find another awning on the UK market that looks quite like this one.

Details:

The MX-3 is suitable for various applications, shading areas of up to 6m wide at 3m projection and 5m wide with a 3.5m projection. The arms and fabric cover are fully protected by the front profile when the awning is retracted, creating a complete overall appearance. The cassette also hides the roller tube when the awning is extended, whilst the brackets are obscured as they are located behind the awning. The guttering system is sleekly integrated with the rounded front profile.

The arm bearer is manufactured with die-cast aluminium and is powdercoated, and features an integrated, variable pitch setting mechanism. Set the awning cover anwhere between 5 and 35 degrees as a flat wall fixture or up to 70 degrees using an eaves bracket fixture..

Customisation is yours

If you require an awning with neat lines, unique curves and huge colour possibilities, the MX-3 is an excellent choice. Whether you want a bright awning that brings your patio area to life, or a sophisticated awning that perfectly complements your outdoor space, the MX-3 features various properties that allow for both of this options with lots of styles inbetween.

There are six standard colours for the frame, end cap and panel, with the possibility to combine these colours for your own unique finish. A huge selection of awning fabrics.
The lower cassette is designed with a slot that allows the LED line option to be located to create the perfect overall evening ambience.

Handling and Lifting

The Markilux MX-3 is a substantial, heavy-duty full cassette awning. Due to its weight and bulk, safe installation requires a minimum of two (and often three) competent people to lift the cassette onto the wall brackets safely. Mechanical lifting aids are recommended for larger sizes. Do not attempt to lift or position this awning alone.

Fixing and Structure

The MX-3 utilises an "End Fix" bracket system, where the mounting points are located at the extreme ends of the cassette. This concentrates the entire load of the awning at these two points, making the quality of the fixing critical.

  • Structural Integrity: The leverage forces generated by an MX-3 (especially at projections up to 3m or 3.5m) are significant. The wall must be sound, stable, and capable of withstanding these dynamic loads.
  • Fixings: You must select high-quality anchors appropriate for your specific substrate (e.g., resin anchors for brick/concrete). Standard expansion bolts may not be sufficient for all wall types.
  • Single Storey Extensions: Never fit a heavy retractable awning like the MX-3 to the top courses of a single-storey structure without reinforcement. We strongly recommend using spreader plates to distribute the load down to the lower, compressive parts of the wall. Please contact us if you are unsure; we can supply various spreader plates to suit different needs.

Professional Installation Recommended

While DIY installation is possible for experienced tradespeople, we strongly advise engaging a professional installer for the Markilux MX-3. The combination of weight, precise levelling requirements, and structural load factors means professional experience is invaluable for a safe, long-lasting fit.

Installation Services

We do not currently offer a nationwide installation service, though we are exploring this for the future.

  • Local Service: If you are located within 40 miles of Northamptonshire, we can provide a quote from our trusted, long-standing professional installers.
  • Self-Install Support: For customers managing their own project, we provide handy information PDFs and technical support to assist you or your builder.

Safety Note: If you have any doubts regarding the suitability of your wall or the installation process, please contact us or consult a structural engineer before proceeding.

Markilux awnings carry a comprehensive 2 year manufacturers warranty for use in domestic applications and a 5 year warranty on the electric motor drive unit. Exact details on the warranty details and conditions are available on request…

How to Measure for the Markilux MX-3 Awning

The Markilux MX-3 is a stunning, shapely full cassette awning that makes a bold design statement. However, it is also a substantial, heavy-duty system. Because it uses an "End Fix" mounting design (brackets located at the far ends of the cassette), accurate measuring and structural assessment are critical.

1. Ordering Width & The "End Fix" Factor

Unlike many awnings where brackets can slide along the back bar, the MX-3 brackets are positioned at the extreme outer edges of the cassette.

  • Structural Check: You must have solid, structural masonry exactly where the left and right ends of the awning will sit. You cannot move the brackets inwards to avoid a weak spot.
  • Load Warning: The MX-3 can be up to 6m wide. The entire load of this large system is concentrated at these two end points. Fixing into single-skin brickwork or near loose mortar joints is not sufficient without reinforcement.
  • Fabric Width: The fabric cover is narrower than the overall cassette width (approx. 150mm less), so factor this in if you are trying to cover a specific window or door width.

2. Projection and Dimensions

The MX-3 is available with projections up to 3000mm (or 3500mm in specific widths).

  • Cassette Size: The cassette itself is 120mm high x 230mm deep. Ensure you have vertical wall space to accommodate this profile flush against the wall.
  • Horizontal Coverage: Remember that when the awning is pitched for rain run-off, the actual horizontal distance covered is slightly less than the arm length.

3. Mounting Height and Pitch

For proper operation and rain protection, correct mounting height is essential.

  • Minimum Pitch: Markilux recommends a minimum pitch of 14 degrees for rainwater run-off.
  • Headroom: Aim for 2000mm – 2100mm clearance under the front profile when extended.
  • Height Rule of Thumb: For a 3000mm projection at 14° pitch, you typically need to mount the cassette at 2800mm – 2900mm from the ground.
  • Note: If you are restricted on height (e.g., above a patio door with a low soffit), you may need to reduce the pitch, meaning the awning becomes a sun-only product and must be retracted in rain.

4. Obstacles and Fixings

Because you cannot move the bracket positions, existing wall features can be a major issue if not spotted early.

  • Downpipes: If a downpipe runs exactly where the end of the awning needs to be, you will need Stand-Off Brackets (Pipe Brackets) to space the cassette forward and clear the obstruction.
  • Uneven Walls: If the wall has stepped brickwork or decorative banding, we can supply packing plates or stand-offs to ensure the cassette sits perfectly level.
  • Spreader Plates: Given the weight of the MX-3, we strongly recommend spreader plates for installations on:
    • Single-storey extensions (to spread load down to lower courses).
    • Older properties with softer brick/mortar.
    • Walls where the fixing point is close to a window reveal or lintel.

5. Summary Checklist

  1. Have I measured the total ordering width?
  2. Is the wall solid and obstruction-free exactly at the two end points?
  3. Do I have enough height (approx 2.8m+) to achieve a rain-safe pitch?
  4. If fitting to a single-storey extension, have I considered spreader plates to handle the extra leverage?
